When we relocated back, our rescue dog Max was the biggest concern. Three years together—couldn’t leave him behind. But wow, the lessons hit hard.
Where we went wrong early
Started too late. I thought one month was enough. The import permit needs in-person AFCD submission in Hong Kong—I flew back just for paperwork. Start 6 months ahead minimum.
Microchip and vaccines
Max had an ISO chip; we added AVID 9-digit for dogs. Rabies shot timed right, plus cores. RNATT test passed—key for 30-day quarantine now (Group IIIA win since 2025).
Health cert and transport
Official Mainland vet cert within 14 days. IATA crate, cargo flight. Notified AFCD 24 hours before. Arrival: scanned, checked, straight to Kai Tak quarantine.
Quarantine reality
30 days felt long, but better than the old 120. Visited daily—Hong Kong$90/day added up, but seeing him okay helped. Booked early; still waited months for a spot.
